There are two new and fun clubs in Sterling High School. These new clubs are the crochet club and a new ping pong club. If you would like to be more involved at S.H.S. there are constant adaptations to activities.
The new crochet club was started by science teacher Marissa Record, and the new ping pong club started by History teacher Nolan Baker. The crochet club was started as a safe space for students to learn how to crochet and unleash their creativity.
Record said, “I taught myself to crochet over the summer and found it was an excellent stress-reliever.”
An activity such as crochet can be relaxing because it isn’t very competitive and students can utilize this as a creative outlet.
Freshman Caylee Lyons shared, “Most people have been working on blankets but we have just been making whatever we want to.”
Currently the club is looking forward to making items for the CGH NICU. These items will include items such as baby hats and blankets. In the future there might be a collaboration between the crochet club and the travel club to make travel accessories.
Record says, “Eventually we want to do a collaboration with the Travel club and make passport holders/travel accessories.”
Ping pong is an activity that can be enjoyed by many people, which is the reason Mr. Baker decided to start the club as a way to share his love for ping pong.
Baker shared, “I have always been a fan of ping pong and my family gets very competitive with ping pong at family reunions.”
The ping pong club is currently not competitive but could possibly become competitive in the future.
Baker said, “We do not currently play any other teams competitively, but it is possible we will do so in future school years if the interest continues to grow.” The club is mostly about getting people together to play games of ping pong to develop their skills while meeting new people.
Sophomore Yvette Stafford said, “I find it enjoyable. I love getting to know new people and talking to others.”
As the years go on, S.H.S. makes sure to encourage the start of new clubs to bring people together and learn in a safe environment. These new clubs hope to have more students join soon.
