Earning the title of captain for Sterling High School teams is a well respected and an honorable title to have as the captain represents the team and the school. Good sportsmanship is something that is preached for S.H.S. captains as captains bring teams together to play as a whole.
For varsity football this year, seniors Cale Ledergerber, Andre Klaver, and Lucas Austin are captains. Varsity volleyball has junior Delali Amankwa and senior Olivia Melcher as captains and for girls golf, juniors Brinley Francis and Carmen Camacho lead the way.
In volleyball, all players were interviewed by coach Dale Dykeman and assistant coach Kaylee Martin. While being interviewed, they talked about the players’ roles for the team this year and playing time. They then asked if the player wanted to nominate herself to be captain this year and then vote for four teammates who you would want to be captain. After everyone voted, Amankwa was chosen as one of the captains and it was a three-way tie for the other captain position between Melcher, Kirra Gibson, and Maggie Rowzee. Then the team re-voted and Melcher was announced as the other captain.
The football team had an application online. Coaches have the final say on who’s captain but the players do vote.
Senior Andre Klaver said, “I would say a good captain is someone who leads and other players want to follow on the field, in the weight room, and follow their example in public to properly represent the team.”
For the girls golf team, everyone voted for two captains. Francis and Camacho have each played golf for three years. Captains were chosen by coach Weston Henry after taking the golfers aside and asking them to name two girls out of the team that they think would best fit captain roles.
Francis says, “I think what makes a good captain is the ability to step in and help the team whenever they may need it.”
Coach Henry did not have any input on who was captain as it was solely on the girls to choose. Francis and Camancho share the same responsibilities, which is to best prepare everyone on the team whether it’s a meet or practice, especially with so many new faces on the golf team.
Being a captain is a huge responsibility and makes the team better. Memories from sports will stick with you throughout your lifetime.
