S.H.S. wraps up speech season
This year was a bit of a shocker for the speech team, as the team started off by only having four people in the club. Despite the small numbers, the team still had one member progress to sectionals after only participating in three meets. The team started off the season at DeKalb High School, which was one of the biggest meets this year. With the DeKalb meet being the first meet, as well as it being such a big one, no one broke finals at that meet.
After DeKalb the girls practiced and participated for the Rochelle meet, where sophomore Riliegh Wren worked her hardest, but still did not break finals. However, freshman Avery Moran and Kyla Smith broke into runner-up finalists along with junior Michelle Henderson.
At Rochelle, Moran and Smith earned sixth out of the seven people in their round. Henderson finished fifth in her round for prose reading.
The Rock Falls meet arrived quickly after the Rochelle meet. This was the first meet where Henderson performed her Dramatic Interpretation, and she made it to finals for the DI, at the Rock Falls tournament, Henderson had broken finals for both Dramatic Interpretation and Prose Reading.
With only doing three meets, regionals came up on the girls quickly. Speech coach Victoria Duffin wanted the girls to have a chance to watch each other’s creations and what the girls have achieved this year together. After practicing their pieces in front of one another, they were on their way to regionals.
At regionals Moran and her partner Smith broke finals for their Humorous Duet Acting, and Henderson broke finals in both her Dramatic Interpretation and Prose Reading. After finals they learned that Moran and Smith had finished their season by getting sixth in regionals, and they learned Henderson got into Sectionals. Henderson broke finals for her Prose Reading and ended the season with fifth place in that event.
After all the girls tried their hardest this season, the whole team is prepared to start with some new events and hopefully some new people for next season.
