Entertainment Review: Met Gala 2022

“Gilded glamour and white tie” was the theme for the 2022 Met Gala, held on May 2nd. This is a continuation of last year’s theme “In America, An Anthology of Fashion.” The gilded age was between the late 1800s and early 1900s when American innovation boomed. It’s all about gold, glitter, and showing wealth.

Most on theme

Maude Apatow: For Apatow’s first Met Gala, she showed up in a slinky black Miu Miu dress with a gothic take on gilded glamour. The bust and straps were a solid black velvety material. It also features black crystals and fringing, which was popular in the 1920s. She had a diamond Cartier choker and a flower brooch to pin back her old timey waves; also incorporating crimson lipstick, one of the most classic colours. In my opinion, her look is very classy and represents the theme very well.

Daisy Edgar-Jones: Jones wore a flapper-style dress by Oscar de la Renta featuring silver, glittering fringe. The makeup look was simple with a blue eyeshadow. Since the theme is all about glitter and glam, the dress and jewels fit perfectly. She accessorised with platinum and white jewels by Tiffany & Co.

Camila Mendes: Mendes’ outfit really emphasised the gold in the “gilded glamour” theme. She wore a gold glittery dress by Alexandre Mattiussi with gold fringe that trailed to the floor, and gold jewellery from the early 1900’s by Fred Leighton. The up-do and make up add to the class of the outfit.

Most Creative

Anderson .Paak: .Paak arrived in a head to toe Gucci outfit designed by Alessandro Michele. The piece that made me put him in the most creative category was the embroidered floral jacket. Men at the Met Gala usually wear a black suit, but .Paak brought something new to the table.

Jordan Roth: Roth was said to steal the show, showing up in one of the strangest outfits. He wore full Thom Browne; a black ornate overcoat made of veleted and other materials, inspired by the swirls of gogottes. Beneath the coat there is a white button up, a corset, and bustle. He also had a very interesting hairstyle and a bold makeup look.

Jared Leto & Alessandro Michele: Leto and Michele went as a duo, both wearing cream colored tuxedos with glittery floral embroidery by Gucci. The outfits also featured red satin bow ties and a crystal clip to pin back their matching hairstyles. This isn’t the first time Leto and Michele have shown off their resemblance on the red carpet.

Most Impressive

Blake Lively: Lively wore an Atelier Versace reversible dress inspired by New York City. It is rose gold with a bow that is untiable to reveal a cascading blue train. The inspiration and overall design for this dress is very impressive in my opinion.

Dove Cameron: Cameron’s wearing an Iris van Herpen look inspired by the “cosmic structures of spiral nebulae.” The white fringe-like detailing on the arms reminds me of butterfly wings, a very impressive design structure.

Frederick Robertson: Robertson also showed up in an impressive design by Iris van Herpen inspired by porcupines. There are black ombre pine like structures all over the dress that seem to defy gravity , trailing down the fingers and to the floor and sticking out all over the torso.

My overall favorites were Sabrina Carpenter, Evan Mock, Maude Apatow, Ashton Sanders, Dove Cameron, and HoYeonJung. It was extremely difficult to pick out outfits for all the different categories since there were so many options. I would recommend checking out some of the designs mentioned in this article, you won’t be disappointed.
