Here at Sterling High School, Golden Warrior TV films almost all of our sports and theater activities. In order to film the many events, GWTV hires Sterling High School students to capture all of the angles, allowing these students to be introduced to filming and broadcasting..
At S.H.S., two of the students who are involved in Golden Warrior TV are sophomore Loren Fox and senior Phelix Cervantez. Students shared what a typical game day looks like for them, along with their personal experiences and insights about being part of GWTV.
Sophomore Loren Fox said, “I first got into GWTV through working with Centennial Auditorium. Working with CA also means working for sports games with GWTV.” For Fox, a typical Friday will usually consist of getting to the stadium at 3 p.m. to help set up cameras, get the broadcast room working, getting Jim Spencer’s area set up and making sure that wireless cameras are able to work on the field.
The setup usually takes about two to three hours depending on how many people we have. “The best part about doing GWTV isn’t about getting paid for it, it is about the experience. Being able to do things like this for the school and our school’s community is so exciting,” Fox shared.
While Fox is newer to GWTV, Cervantez has had a little more experience but started his GWTV journey in a similar way.
Cervantez shared, “Originally, Kyle Morgan (Tech director) asked me if I’d be interested in filming the school play and I agreed, and since last year I’ve been traveling with the crew to all the away game, as of right now depending on if the football game is home or away, I am either part of the band or travel to whatever city the team is going to.”
Putting on a production like those on GWTV is no easy task and takes much time to pack and set up the equipment.
Cervantez, said, “Our usual schedule is packing up everything from the broadcast room into our truck that we bring to the game, we’ll find something to eat on the way there and once we’re there we try to get everything setup including all of the computers in the truck, everything for Jim Spencer and Elroy, and all of the cameras for the game set up before any guests arrive, after that we have our own time during the JV game until the Varsity game starts which is when we start and I’m chasing the team on the field for the rest of the night until we pack up.”
Behind every game and performance, the students of GWTV work hard to make sure Sterling High School’s events are captured and shared with the community. Their commitment, teamwork, and passion show that GWTV is more than just filming; it’s about learning, connecting, and creating lasting experiences both on and off the field.
